Q: What is CCW, what is CHP, and what is the difference?
A1: Concealed Carry Weapon (CCW) is a common term for the practice of carrying a hidden firearm or other weapon in public, typically requiring a permit. Although incorrect, people sometimes use the terms CCW and CHP interchangeably.
A2: Concealed Handgun Permit (CHP) is a legal authorization that allows an individual to carry a concealed handgun in public, subject to state-specific regulations and eligibility requirements. This is the permit issued by law enforcement (LE) in Colorado. You need a CHP before you CCW in public.
Q: Is it okay to ask someone if they are carrying? Is it okay to tell people that you're carrying?
A1: NO, in most cases. Very few exceptions here. Even when I see someone printing, I will not do anything to highlight the situation.
A2: NO, in most cases. Ask yourself why you would do this.
Q: I have a training certificate from 9 years ago. Can I use this to get my permit?
A: No, you cannot use an old certificate. You will need a certificate that is compliant with the current requirements per C.R.S. § 18-12-203.
Q: Am I eligible to take the refresher class?
A: Yes, if you have successfully completed an 8-hour handgun training class that complies with the current requirements per C.R.S. § 18-12-203. I print this compliance on my signed and dated student certificates.
Q: How often do I have to take the refresher class?
A: You only need to take the refresher class before you renew your permit, no more than one year prior to renewal.
Q: How much do you charge for your class?
A: Typically between $199 and $289 per person for the instructor as my classes are intentionally small and focused. Range fees and classroom rental are not included. Ask me about NRA member and group discounts.
Q: What all is included in your class?
A: The instructor's time and materials; including paper exams, waivers, targets, and completion certificates. Classroom venues and range locations are not included and will be determined based upon your unique requirements.
Q: What do I need to bring to your class?
A1: To the classroom: No firearms, NO ammunition. Bring valid ID, something to take notes with, water, snacks, and an open mind.
A2: To the range: A safe and functional firearm, 100 rounds of ammo, appropriate eye & ear protection, and a positive attitude!
Q: How long is your concealed handgun training class?
A: Eight hours for the concealed handgun training class, often over 2 weekend days. This time is inclusive of classroom instruction and the live-fire shooting exercise at the range per C.R.S. § 18-12-202.5.(2).
Q: How long is your concealed handgun refresher class?
A: Two hours for the concealed handgun refresher class. This time is inclusive of instruction and live-fire. Expect to see refresher classes starting around 2029 since you will need the 8-hour class first. Reference C.R.S. § 18-12-202.5.(4)(a) for more detail.
Q: What score do I need to pass?
A: For both the concealed handgun training class (the 8-hour class) and the concealed handgun refresher class (the 2-hour class), per C.R.S. § 18-12-202.5, a student must achieve:
A minimum seventy percent (70%) accuracy score, as determined by the instructor, in the 50-round live-fire shooting exercise and
A passing score of at least eighty percent (80%) on the written (open book) exam.
Q: Where are your classes held?
A: This is where we have a lot of flexibility. I can come to your location, or we can talk about alternative venues for both classroom and live fire portions of the class. I do not maintain a classroom facility nor a training range.
